From the Fields of Siberia
Missionary News from the Thormodsons

Greetings from our family and our mission congregation in Novosibirsk.  This month, I would like to share a little about the support our mission is providing with your offerings, to the outreach work in the Republic of Byrat.  The Republic of Byrat is a region within Russia, that borders Mongolia.  Our mission has been supporting the mission work of a young deacon there named Yuri Podelski.  Two years ago, our mission helped build a church in the area, and now we continue to assist the congregation as they expand their work to other villages.
Below is a picture of a children's study which are being held on a weekly basis.  The Children in this area are hungry to know more about Jesus, and our mission also send Bibles and Children's bibles for distribution.  Last year, we sent this region two containers which they quickly distributed.

We also requested a grant from the LCMS World Relief to assist a real problem.  Many children in the area are unable to attend school simply because they do not have adequate clothing (see picture below).  The LCMS World Relief gave our mission a grant to purchase clothing for more than 100 children in city where the church is located.  Below are pictured two children that received coats, pants, shirt, and shoes.  While we were only able to scratch the surface of the poverty in this area, this type of aid greatly assists our mission work.  The people of Byrat send you their graditute for the assistance you have given, not only for the clothing for their children, but also for helping to establish their church.  Continue to pray for the mission work in this region, and for the leaders of the church as they continue share the Gospel.

We also rejoiced to hear that two new projects in Novosibirsk have been approved by the LCMS World Relief.  The first is to open a Children's shelter.  The shelter will be to assist street children in finding new homes within the Russian structure.  Many children live on the streets in Novosibirsk and there are very few organization that can help them.  The shelter is designed to bring children in and assist the governement in placing the children in orphanages or into homes.  The second project is a Rehabilition Center for Handicapped Children.  The center exists, but is in very poor condition making work almost impossible.  The funds will be used to repair the current facilities and purchase some medical equipement to the Center can help those who are born with handicaps.  Continue to pray and support these LCMS World Relief projects, that many will receive not only physical assistance, but receive the spiritual care which only our Lord can bring.  Also pray for our meetings over the next few weeks, as we want to included in the plans, one room as a chapel/meeting room.  This will enable members from our congregation to continue the ministry within the facilities once the remodeling is completed.  While chapels in hospitals in America might be taken for granted, in Russia, it would be a new concept.  Thank you for keeping us and our mission in your prayers and support.
